Cubes and genies
Hello world, hello Planet, hello fellow KDE lovers. I suck at introductions so I’ll keep this very short: I’m Lucas and I will be helping out on KWin core and compositing for 4.2 (And beyond). Yeah, that should be enough for the intro. ^_^
I would like to take this time to introduce you to some of the new features of KWin that have been added to the new 4.2 trunk:
- We have a cube. Martin Gräßlin is working on this for GSoC and although it’s still in the oven it’s still great to play around with.
- Martin has also added a magic lamp effect as well (Or will anyway, doesn’t look like it’s been committed yet).
- Window snapping has been improved with two new snap zones: Screen center (And screen edge center), and window corners. No longer do you need to get ridiculously close to the screen so you can pixel-perfectly align windows into a grid. =D
- The blur effect is now opacity-dependent—the more transparent the window, the less blurry its background becomes. This means it can now be used in conjunction with the fade effect without any aesthetic disadvantages.
- It is now possible to move maximized windows between Xinerama screens without having to restore them first.
- Taskbar thumbnails now work again thanks to Alexis (More of a Plasma change but mneh)
Think that’s a lot? Wait another few weeks for more. ;-)

Great, the one effect from Compiz I missed is on its way (and no, I don’t mean the cube…even if that’s fun for showing off…). No, I mean the magic lamp one. The best effect ever for visual feedback for minimizing if you ask me.

Kwin is beautiful and integrates into KDE so well. It takes a lot less resources on my hardware than compiz ever did. So, I am very happy camper.
The one thing, I would argue, is to keep the bling to a reasonable limit, because one of the hard things about compiz was its huge number of options that eventually made it overwhelming. For me, kwin in KDE 4.1 is very close to the right mix of elegance, ergonomics and beauty.

Great news! I’ve missed that feature.

It is nice to see your blog on the planet - now there will be more KWin postings ;-)
(Perhaps I should start blogging in English to get syndicated as well…)

@Martin
You could always just have an “English” category on your blog and just get that one aggregated. I’m sure we’d all like to hear about the stuff you’re working on.

Any chance the ‘shadow looks horrible with wobbly windows’ thing will be resolved anytime soon? I really like shadows, but I’ve also grown fond of the wobbly windows (on lowest setting) as it gives windows a much more natural feeling…

I personally will only be concentrating on usability effects, I don’t like to waste excess CPU cycles so there is no point in writing something that I will never use. This doesn’t mean though that if someone writes a good bling effect that it won’t be added. I can foresee an “overwhelming” amount of plugins and settings happening in the future but that just means we need to design an easier-to-use configuration window before it happens. ;-)
Several patches have already been proposed but unfortunately they had ill side effects. We’ll work something out.

good work, only want effects that improve the use of the desktop and are really good integrated into the desktop, maybe something that you can call “native effects” for kde, effects devs for a better experience of kde4.x that replace something bored, like delete something and that can move into a magic lamp into the trash.
again, good work and sorry for my english :P

me again, forget something that could be really usefull, intregrate gethotnewstuff2, so, when someone developed a nice snow effect for december, cold be easy installed.

me again, forget something that could be really usefull, intregrate gethotnewstuff2
That would be difficult to impossible, because KWin plug-ins are written in C++. Ghns is only for interpreted add-ons, since it can’t compile.
Have your say
